Cheat Lake lowered for sediment removal

MORGANTOWN — Cheat Lake’s water level is lower than usual. A fact that is likely hard for motorists on Interstate 68 to miss.

That’s because Lake Lynn Generating, LLC — owner, operator and licensee of the Lake Lynn Hydroelectric Project — dropped the water level to remove sediment build-up at the Sunset Marina public   launch.

“We’re responsible for the public launch, and we’ve gotten access complaints,” said Bob Flickner, operations and maintenance manager.

Officials began drawing down water levels March 1. Right now, it’s at 857 feet.

“The lake level comes up to 863 by April 1. Then, in May, we keep it between 868 and 870.”

The low level of the water can be seen at the old Ices Ferry/Cheat Lake Bridge.
