YCF accepting scholarship applications for 2020-21 academic year

Your Community Foundation of North Central West Virginia Inc. is accepting scholarship applications for the 2020-21 academic year.

YCF oversees 36 diverse scholarship funds primarily to benefit students in north-central West Virginia. Some scholarships are designated for graduating seniors of certain schools or those who live in particular counties. Others are awarded for specific fields of study such as music, veterinary practice or engineering. Most applications require financial need, an essay and letter of recommendation.

While the majority of YCF scholarships are for graduating high school seniors, some are available for those in college. Prospective applicants are encouraged to review the scholarship descriptions on YCF website, www.ycfwv.org/scholarships/. Scholarship applications are completed online and are due March 2. Recipients will be announced in May.

A new scholarship is available this year. The Sam McLaughlin Scholarship for the Arts was established by the family of the late William “Sam” McLaughlin III. This scholarship honors Sam’s lifelong commitment to and passion for the arts and will provide a $750 scholarship to a graduate of Fairmont Senior High School. The recipient must be pursuing post-secondary education in fine arts and must demonstrate financial need.

“Start your application today,” said YCF President Patty Showers Ryan. “Applicants will want to spend time on the essay and talk with one or two references to complete the recommendation section.”

The online application allows students to save the application, so it does not need to be completed in one sitting.

YCF administers a wide variety of scholarships on behalf of many donors. For the 2019-20 academic year, YCF awarded over $260,000 in scholarships to 101 students across north-central West Virginia.

YCF’s mission is to promote philanthropy and build endowment funds to benefit our communities. Through financial resources, YCF extends many forms of assistance to qualified people, programs and projects. Primarily serving North Central West Virginia, YCF’s underlying goal is always to enhance the quality of life for those the organization serves.
