Brewer Hill not getting
fair shake from Star City
Star City is divided into two distinct areas. The one area is to the east of Monongahela Boulevard and the other to the west of Monongahela Boulevard, which is referred to as Brewerton or Brewer Hill. Many people of Brewer Hill are considering seceding from Star City.
Brewer Hill provides a major tax base to the town of Star City with businesses such as Texas Roadhouse, CVS Pharmacy, Aldi Foods, Golden Corral, Hotel M and will eventually include Sherwin Williams. The area also includes over 100 rental units and the U.S. government forestry building.
Star City Council had a meeting March 26 and listed priority streets for paving or re-paving and not one street on Brewer Hill was on the list.
In the town of Star City about 70 percent of the unpaved streets are on Brewer Hill. Last year the town paved 300 linear feet on North Main Street on Brewer Hill. To make things fair they decided to pave Broadway Street on the other side of town. They paved 400 linear feet that was a very difficult terrain and more costly.
Brewer Hill will never be completely paved in my lifetime. We have Wayland Street on Brewer Hill with mixed multi-family and commercial zoning that contains about 50 units on a dirt street between Saratoga Avenue and Center Hill Avenue. This is unacceptable.
The residents and property owners on Wayland Street between Center Hill and Canton actually paid to have their block paved and were then threatened by the town with a lawsuit.
We, the residents of Brewer Hill, must ask ourselves, “What is the benefit of remaining a part of Star City?” Surely Granville or Morgantown would welcome us and embrace the business income.

Vote for councilors
with some new ideas
We’re approximately a month away from election of Morgantown City Council. I believe that it is time to review what the current City Council members have or have not done for the citizens in Morgantown. The main thing I can see citizens complain about is the user fee (tax) that you are required to pay if you work in city limits.
When this fee was first put into place (January 2016) it was to be used to help increase the city police force and to pave roads in the city.
I read here lately that now they are wanting to use this money to build sidewalks in the city. This money should only be used for what it was first set up for. If the police is at full force and all of the roads in the city are paved, then this fee should be eliminated.
I also feel that City Council members should be limited to two two-year terms in office. This should not be a permanent job.
It is time we look at the list of candidates running for office and elect some new members that have new ideas on how to run the city. We have members in council that have had eight years or more as a councilor. These councilors have been in office too long. It is time to replace them.
If City Council needs suggestions on projects in this city, I suggest using some funds to clean up Morgantown. For example, down below the (High Street) post office, there is a lot of trash on the banks that flows into Deckers Creek. It is also a hangout for the homeless and transients here in Morgantown.
Cleaning up the streets and removing the graffiti on the buildings around town should be the No.1 priority. How can we be proud of our city if it is dirty?
Are you satisfied with the current councilors and continuing with the same old ideas? If not, vote to change the councilors.
