Three taken to hospital in I-79 accident

MORGANTOWN — A driver attempting an illegal U-turn caused a four-vehicle accident near mile marker 155 on Interstate 79 Tuesday morning.
Chief Deputy Al Kisner, of the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department, said a driver slowed down and got in the left-hand lane so he could cross the median at one of the crossovers meant for use by emergency services.
That action caused the car behind him and the two behind that to collide in a chain reaction, Kisner said.
Three people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.
One southbound lane was reopened about 20 minutes after the accident and the second was cleared for traffic in about an hour, Kisner said.
Charges against the driver who attempted to cross the median are likely pending, as his actions caused the accident, Kisner said.
