Preston High students to learn about farming

KINGWOOD — A portion of the county farm will soon be used by Preston High students.
Commissioner Dave Price and Don Smith approved the arrangement Monday. Commissioner Craig Jennings was not present. County Administrator Kathy Mace will have an agreement drawn up for the commission and board to sign at a later date.
Preston High is located on part of what was once the county farm.
Bob Varner, the new Future Farmers of America advisor, farm manager and animal processing teacher at Preston High, addressed the commission. He asked for the use of land below the new barn and the old barn lot near the cemetery.
“I’m wanting to grow the program and teach kids about how to feed lot animals and about different types of feeds and pastures,” Varner said. They would also make hay.
The usage will not impact the walking track or a wetlands area near where a barn was taken down last year.
“It’s a good use of it,” Smith said of the land.
Also at the meeting,
