Red Cross experiencing blood shortage, seeking donors of all types

MORGANTOWN — The summer is one of the most challenging times of the year for blood and platelet donations. Regular donors are away with their families for the summer or simply partaking in summer related activities. When an accident occurs, it’s crucial for emergency facilities to have significant volumes of donated blood products.
The American Red Cross is seeking additional donors of all blood types.

“We have seen a trickle-down effect since the 4th of July,” said external communications manager, Regina E. Boothe Bratton.

“This summer is particularly bad. Nationwide, much worse than last summer.”

The Red Cross is experiencing a blood shortage, crucial to providing sufficient blood supply for patients who require it daily.

“Regardless of season, the Red Cross must collect more than 300 blood donations every day in the Greater Alleghenies Blood Service Region, for patients at hospitals around the region,” said Boothe Bratton.

Blood donations are currently being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in.

Type O negative is the universal blood type and what emergency room personnel reach for when there is no time to determine the blood type of patients in the most serious situations.

Type O positive is the most common blood type and can be transfused to Rh-positive patients of any blood type.

“A single blood donation could potentially save up to 3 lives. We encourage appointments, but walk-ins are always welcome,” said Boothe Bratton.

As a special thank you, all those who come to donate blood or platelets July 30 through Aug. 30, 2018, will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email.
