United Bankshares Inc. reports record earnings for second quarter

MORGANTOWN — United Bankshares Inc. reported record earnings for the second quarter and the first half of 2018.

The company, based in Charleston and Washington, D.C., said earnings for the second quarter of 2018 – April 1 through June 30 – were a record $66.3 million as compared to earnings of $37.8 million for the second quarter of 2017.

Earnings for the first half of 2018 were a record $128 million, as compared to earnings of $75.9 million for the first half of 2017.

Shareholder dividends climbed slightly, from 33 cents at the end of June 2017, to 34 cents this year.

United bought Virginia-based Cardinal Bank last year. The purchase, it said increased levels of average balances, income, and expense as compared to the second quarter and first half of 2017.

United has consolidated assets of approximately $19.2 billion with full service offices in West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and D.C. United has more than 2,500 shareholders in the Greater Morgantown area.
