No. 2 University eliminates No. 3 George Washington, advances to Class AAAA state championship series against crosstown rival Morgantown

SOUTH CHARLESTON – Little Creek Park may feel like Mylan Park for some on Thursday afternoon, as the Mohawk Bowl takes center stage in the Class AAAA state softball championship.

The University and Morgantown High School softball teams will clash for the chance to take home a state championship back to Monongalia County after the Hawks defeated No. 3 George Washington on Thursday morning in the final elimination game of the week.

UHS senior Maddie Campbell pitched and hit the Hawks past the Patriots with a complete-game shutout in the circle, allowing seven hits with four strikeouts.

She also accounted for two of the Hawks’ three hits and had a direct impact on all three runs with two runs scored and an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning.

Campbell is now batting .500 for the tournament through four games and has been nearly untouchable in the circle.

“We are happy to get the win, but we know we aren’t done yet,” Campbell said. “It’s fun that we will be playing against a team we know so well and that either way the trophy is coming back to Morgantown.”

After Campbell’s double in the second gave UHS a 2-0 lead, a sacrifice fly by Madi Shaver gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead.

Campbell continued to spin the ball in the circle and continued shutting down the George Washington offense.

A lead-off single in the top of the seventh didn’t faze the UHS defense at all as it earned three outs on the next three batters to secure the contest.

Morgantown and University will square off for the Class AAAA state softball championship at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
