MORGANTOWN – The Morgantown High School volleyball team found itself in an early hole against Hedgesville in Tuesday’s Class AAAA North Region co-final, but responded with a strong finish to the opening set and carried that momentum the rest of the way.

No. 3 MHS swept No. 6 Hedgesville 3-0, winning 25-22, 25-17, and 25-17 to secure a return trip to Charleston for next week’s Class AAAA state tournament.

The two programs are familiar with one another on the postseason stage, having met in the Class AAAA state championship match in both 2024 and 2025. This time, the Mohigans made sure their season would continue.

Hedgesville controlled the early stages of the opening set, building a 10-5 advantage and forcing Morgantown to regroup with a timeout. The Mohigans responded immediately, using a strong serving stretch from junior Leah Greeny to cut the deficit to 11-10.

The teams traded points before Morgantown began to take control. An ace from senior Izzy Marra gave the Mohigans a 15-14 lead, and the momentum continued to swing in their favor.

Greeny delivered a big kill to extend the advantage to 19-16, then a block at the net pushed the lead to 22-18.

Hedgesville made one final push, cutting the deficit to 24-22, but MHS closed out the set 25-22 to take a 1-0 match lead.

"They come out with a different offensive look than we had seen at all on film, but once we were able to adjust, we were fine," MHS head coach Abigail Wolfe said. "We are capable of pulling ourselves out of a deficit and try to stress to our girls to stay in the moment and not worry about any of the bad points and that you can only move on to the next one."

That comeback proved to be the spark the Mohigans needed.

MHS wasted little time establishing control in the second set, jumping out to a 7-1 lead and forcing an early Hedgesville timeout. The Mohigans continued to build on that advantage, leading 11-3 and eventually stretching the margin to 17-6.

Greeny added another powerful kill, making it 20-10 as MHS continued to answer Hedgesville’s attempts to build momentum. The Eagles trimmed the lead to seven at 21-14, but the Mohigans steadied themselves and finished the set 25-17.

With one set standing between MHS and another state tournament appearance, Hedgesville continued to compete in the third. The teams traded momentum early, but the hosts used a scoring run to build an 11-6 advantage.

Hedgesville responded by cutting the deficit to 12-10, forcing another MHS timeout. Once again, the Mohigans came out of the break with an answer, pushing the lead to 15-11.

MHS held a 20-16 advantage before putting together another important run. Three consecutive points extended the lead to 23-16, putting the match within reach.

The Mohigans finished the sweep with another 25-17 set victory, completing a comeback from an early first-set deficit and earning their place in next week’s state tournament field.

"We are excited to get back down to states," Wolfe said. "We know no matter what, every team there has to win the same amount of sets and games in order to win the championship. We know we will see a tough opponent in every single matchup, and it doesn't matter what seed we are whatsoever."
