MORGANTOWN – There is something special about seeing a local business owner take a familiar concept and make it their own.
That is part of what makes Bam Bam's Perfectly Southern in Morgantown worth talking about. Moving toward an independently operated restaurant is more than just a change in name. It represents an opportunity for local owners to put their own ideas, personality and passion into a business they can call their own.
Chains certainly have their place in the restaurant industry. They offer familiarity and consistency, but they also operate within a larger corporate structure. Independent restaurants have the freedom to build something different. They can develop their own identity, connect with customers on a more personal level and give the community another locally owned option.
That kind of independence is important for a community like Morgantown.
When people support local businesses, their dollars are more likely to stay in the community. Those businesses create local jobs, support the surrounding economy, and give people an opportunity to build something for themselves. They also add character to a community that can sometimes become crowded with the same national brands found in nearly every other town.
For Bam Bam's, the transition offers a chance to create something with their own name attached. There is a different level of responsibility that comes with that. The decisions, successes and challenges belong to the people running the business.
Of course, opening the doors is only the beginning. Building a loyal customer base takes time, consistency and a willingness to listen to the people walking through the door.
Morgantown has plenty of places to grab a quick meal, but there should always be room for local owners willing to take a chance on themselves.
Bam Bam's Perfectly Southern is an example of what can happen when business owners decide to take a familiar opportunity and put their own spin on it. And that is something worth supporting.
