United Way gears up for food for the holidays

3 min read

The United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties is gearing up for the holiday season in a variety of ways with many opportunities to get involved. From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, we will be partnering with WVRC Media for the Cans for the Community Food Drive. We encourage those who can to stop by the Greer Building located at 1251 Earl L. Core Road with a donation of shelf-stable food items including canned meat, peanut butter, jelly, pasta sauce or other items. All donations collected will go to our Helpful Harvest Food Program which serves over 50 food pantries and feeding programs in Monongalia and Preston counties. Monetary donations will also be accepted by scanning the QR code at the event or texting HelpfulHarvest to 41444.

On Dec. 9, we will be holding the annual Senior Holiday Meal Distribution. Seniors who sign up will receive a bag with holiday meal items including a ham or turkey, side dishes, dessert, bread and some extras. All food items are sponsored by Anderson Excavating this year. We are accepting sign-ups through Nov. 12. To sign up, visit our website at unitedway.org/HFTD and complete the form. Individuals must be 65+ and reside in Monongalia County. We are in need of volunteer drivers for this event to deliver the meals to the seniors' homes. A link to volunteer is also included on our website.

On Dec. 10, in partnership with Christian Help, we will hold the 45th Annual Holiday Food & Toy Distribution from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Morgantown Readiness Center (Armory) located at 90 Army Band Way. Registration to receive toys from Christian Help closed on Oct. 30, but there is no registration required to receive food that day. Food will be provided by Mountaineer Food Bank on a first come, first serve basis. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities available for this event as well, and those can be found by visiting our website listed above.

Help us bring holiday cheer to children, families and seniors in our community this season. Whether you give your time, resources or both, your generosity helps brighten the season. We look forward to seeing many of our community members at one (or all!) of these upcoming events. If you have questions about any of the events, please contact Savanna at savanna@unitedwaympc.org or 304-322-2064.
