Eugene Kenneth Claypole, 86, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully, in his home surrounded by family, Monday, March 24, 2025. He was born August 20, 1938, in Pursglove, the beloved son of the late James and Martha Claypole, who were also long-term residents of Pursglove.
Eugene always found joy in his work and was very proud of his professional accomplishments; starting out at a young age as an underground coalminer, he knew his work wouldn’t stop there. He became the compensation director of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) district 31, eventually ending up as president of the same district. Always eager to find better avenues to help the union and the working class led his passion into politics.
He became a member of the West Virginia Senate 14th district from 1991-1994 and a member of the House of Delagates 44th district for many years after. Lastly, during his campaign he was also on the board of directors for West Virginia University hospitals. His legacy still lives on to this day, with his name displayed at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
One of Eugene’s greatest accomplishments was the adoption of his late daughter, Sandra’s children: Joey Claypole, Sara Cooper and Maria Crysler, following her death.
Eugene was always a family man. He found joy in the simple things in life. Whether it would be a coffee run to Sheetz and meeting up with friends at McDonalds, to playing slot machines with his sisters, Della, Sylvia Jene and Ruby, to laying in his favorite recliner smoking a cigarette with his beloved dog, “Bethy” watching the news. We could always expect a phone call at this time. Just like family, routine was everything.
Surviving Eugene are his children, Deborah (Randy) Weaver, David (Rita) Claypole, and Michelle (Ed McRobie) Claypole. His also survived by 16 grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and his daughter, Sandra Claypole, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Leota Claypole; his son, Eugene Claypole, Jr.; and infant daughter, Linda. He was the last remaining member of his immediate family.
Per his wishes, Eugene will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a late date.
