Josephine Elaine Shatzer, 96, of Morgantown, died July 16, 2022, at her home. She was born on June 30, 1926, in Morgantown, to the late George Franklin and Beatrice (Thomas) Childs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Shatzer, whom she married on Feb. 4, 1945; her sister and brother-in-law, Veronica and Roger McKinney; and many close relatives in the Thomas family.
She was a faithful lifelong member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church (formerly St. Theresa) and was an alumna of St. Francis High School in Morgantown. She worked as a telephone operator for C&P Telephone for more than 21 years until her retirement in 1983, was actively involved in the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 548 and continued her community service throughout her retirement with the Telephone Pioneers of America.
She is survived by her three children: Brian (Sharon) Shatzer, of Morgantown, Donna (Michael) Murray, of Tampa, Fla., and Bradley (Debbie) Shatzer, of Stow, Ohio; five grandchildren: Mark (Nicole) Shatzer, Amanda (Stephen) Poorbaugh, Angel (John) Martin, Sheila (Dave) Graham and Gary (Amy) Shatzer; seven great-grandchildren: Mackenzie, Madison and Jackson Poorbaugh, Andrew Martin, Jacob and Olivia Graham and Cohen Shatzer; and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank all those who helped care for Josephine over the past year, especially Theresa “Tess” Novotny and Pauline Jenkins. Special thanks and gratitude to Sister Nancy White for her weekly visits that always included much love and laughter.
Friends and family will be received at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral mass at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 19 with the Rev. Msgr. Anthony Cincinnati as celebrant. Burial will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Garden.
