Leo Horacek, 107, of Morgantown, died Thursday, July 16, 2026 in Moundsville, W.Va.He was born April 21, 1919 in Topeka, Kans., the son of Leo and Clara Miller Horacek.As a teenager he played trumpet in the Topeka High School Band and Orchestra and in Marshall’s Band of Topeka. He received a music education degree from the University of Kansas in 1941 and joined the Navy, where he became a flight instructor and fighter pilot, flying combat missions in both the Mediterranean and Japan.After the war he returned to KU, where he taught music and eventually received a PhD.
