Shirley Ann Meleady, 85, of Morgantown, West Virginia, passed away at home after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Born on January 3, 1941, in Kane, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Robert Carlson Sr. and Mildred Mae Divins Carlson.
Shirley graduated from Morgantown High School in Morgantown, West Virginia with the Class of 1958. She went on to graduate from nursing school as an RN and worked for 10 years at Mon General. She left nursing to pursue her greatest passion in life as the caretaker for many family members, helping them to cross over in their final days. She again worked at Mon General in Central Sterile for another 15 years before finally retiring in 2006 to be full-time grandmother.
Although Shirley moved to Morgantown as a teenager, she had a deep love for West Virginia University. She especially loved the WVU Mountaineers. She was a loyal fan who never missed a game, whether she was able to attend in person, watch the game on television, or, her favorite, listening to the local radio broadcast. Her favorite song, of course, was John Denver’s “Country Roads.”
Shirley is survived by her sister, Connie Sue Stuchell (Danny) of Arthurdale, West Virginia; her daughter, Michelle Swistok (Andrew) of Morgantown, West Virginia; her son, Michael Meleady of Morgantown, West Virginia; and her beloved grandchildren, Brice, Autumn, and Amanda (Jordan). She was preceded in death by her brothers James and Robert Carlson, her sister Bonnie Lou Pusilo (Timothy), and her former husband Donald Meleady.
The family is planning a celebration of life for Shirley and will announce the details as soon as they are confirmed. The family also wishes to extend its gratitude to Amedisys Home Health as well as all of the friends, family, and neighbors who aided in Shirley’s transition.
