MORGANTOWN — A longtime Morgantown fixture, Fred Fawcett, will serve as parade marshal for the Morgantown Jaycees’ Christmas Parade when it begins at 6:30 p.m. today on High Street.
Fawcett moved to Morgantown from Bruceton Mills 47 years ago and has been a “Downtown Ambassador” since. He has worked with BOPARC and area businesses and always stops by to converse with others.
Morgantown Police will alter traffic patterns starting at 4:45 p.m. Parking will be restricted on High, Prospect and North High streets at 5 p.m.
At 5:30 p.m., the Monongalia County 4-H program will carol and distribute free hot chocolate to guests at the Monongalia County Courthouse Square. Then, at 6 p.m., there will be a Holiday Tree Light-Up on the square. There, a new community tree will be decked in bright holiday decorations and Sean Sikora, Monongalia County commissioner, will share a few words with guests.
Dominick Claudio, Downtown Morgantown property owner and Main Street Morgantown board member, donated the new holiday tree. It will remain in the square until the end of December.
“I am excited to see Downtown Morgantown at in its full holiday glory this year,” said Barbara Watkins, executive director of MSM. “We are thankful for the Monongalia County Commission and Monongalia County 4-H program, for without them, these new traditions would not exist.”
Traffic in the downtown area will be restricted during the parade and will be detoured from Willey Street onto Prospect Street, then up Price Street to Fife Avenue and down North High Street, turning right onto Maiden Lane to College Avenue and then back onto University Avenue
Officers will be at the intersections to assist with traffic. Any motorists wishing to avoid the detour may travel on College Avenue from Willey Street to University Avenue.
Traffic patterns will be returned to normal as soon as possible following the parade.
