Gary “Sonny” Allen Smith, 78, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. He was born Aug. 17, 1944, to the late Willis Gay Smith and Virginia Lucille Stevens Smith.
Sonny worked as a roof bolter and held various other positions for Eastern Associated Coal LLC for over 30 years. Sonny enjoyed fishing, hunting, a cold beer and a juicy Wendy’s hamburger.
He loved spending time with his family and was always up to get ice cream and spend time with his grandchildren. If it was cold out though, you could find him at home bundled up and watching his cowboy shows.
Sonny is survived by his loving partner of 17 years and his daily caregiver up until his last breath, Elizabeth Enlow; his children; Christina Brant and Gary Russell Smith (Courtney Templeton), all of Morgantown; and his favorite ex-daughter-in-law, Andrea Moats, of Tunnelton.
Also surviving are his grandchildren, Madison Shuttleworth, Evan Shuttleworth, Rhylea Smith, Raegan Brant, Alexa Smith and Maci Smith; and brothers; Jerry Smith and Larry Smith (Irene Shelton).
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his twin sister, Alice (Grover) Smyth, as well as his sister-in-law, Shirley Smith.
The family will honor Sonny’s wishes for cremation. No services are scheduled at this time.
