National directive might threaten youth outdoor programs in W.Va. schools

BY CHRIS LAWRENCE CHARLESTON — A guidance document from the United States Department of Education could threaten two popular youth outdoor programs in West Virginia schools. U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona moved to block funding from the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) to schools that offer hunter education and archery programs. Financially troubled Alderson Broaddus University had its authorization pulled Monday during an emergency meeting of the Higher Education Policy Commission, and state higher education officials prepared an order leading to its wind-down.
