WVU Eberly College to mark 25 years with celebration in Woodburn Circle

MORGANTOWN — On July 1, 1993, WVU formally dedicated the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences in honor of the Eberly family — and 25 years later, the college’s dedication to a liberal arts and sciences education is as strong as ever. On Tuesday, the Eberly College will kick off a yearlong celebration of the 25th anniversary of its naming. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends are invited to attend the celebration at 2 p.m. in Woodburn Circle.

University leadership, including President Gordon Gee, will deliver brief remarks at 2:15 p.m., after a ceremonial tolling of the bell in Woodburn Hall’s clock tower. WVU alumnus and Rhodes Scholar Peter Kalis (BA Political Science, 1972), who gave the keynote address at the Eberly College’s dedication convocation in 1993, will also speak.

“As we mark the 25th anniversary of our name, join us for a yearlong celebration of the Eberly family’s generosity and all the educational opportunities it has made possible,” said Gregory Dunaway, dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.

As part of “The Campaign for West Virginia University,” the Eberly Family Charitable Trust and The Eberly Foundation committed substantial resources to the College of Arts and Sciences, providing wide-ranging support for faculty, students and programs.

“Thanks to the investment in our scholarships, facilities, research and hands-on learning, gifts from the Eberly family have allowed us to attract and retain top students and world-class faculty while responding to emerging societal needs,” Dunaway said.

The Eberly College’s history dates back to the beginning of WVU’s history. As early as 1867, the liberal arts and sciences were a central element of the University’s academic offerings. The Board of Visitors created the foundation for the future College when it announced a faculty featuring professors of mental and moral science, ancient languages, English literature, mathematics, and philosophy and natural sciences, disciplines that would become part of the College of Arts and Sciences when it was formally established in 1895.
