FAIRMONT – A man and woman have been taken into custody following the death earlier this week of an 11-year-old boy in their care from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Marion County Sheriff Roger Cunningham said.
James Jeffery Smock, 56, and Tammy Jean Lee, 54, have both been charged with one count apiece of child neglect by parent, guardian, custodian or person in position of trust causing death, he said.
They were arrested Wednesday. Both are currently lodged in the North Central Regional Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond, the sheriff said.
The boy died early Monday morning at a residence on Powell Road, deputies said. The firearm, they said, was unsecured and unsupervised.
An autopsy has been ordered, Cunningham said.
