SOUTH CHARLESTON – As Maddie Wisman goes, so goes Morgantown High School softball.
The 2026 state championship title run made by MHS, led by senior Maddie Wisman, is one that will be talked about forever. Not only within the lines of Monongalia County, but around the state of West Virginia and the softball world.
Wisman and the Mohigans entered the Class AAAA state tournament at the beginning of June as the 4-seed in the bracket, but left no doubt as to who the number one team was by the end of the competition, earning four consecutive shutout victories at Little Creek Park in South Charleston.
The Robert Morris University signee tossed every single inning and pitch for MHS in the tournament, helping lift her team to its first-ever state softball championship. She also batted .500 at the plate through the four contests.
In 2026, Wisman went 22-5 in the circle with a 1.23 ERA. She allowed 108 hits, 56 walks, and 46 runs (32 earned), while striking out 274 batters in 182 innings pitched. Batters held a .163 average against her. She also led MHS in batting average (.484) with 45 hits, 25 RBIs, and 19 runs. She totaled 14 doubles, two triples, and four home runs, drawing 33 walks and only five strikeouts in 127 plate appearances.
Her postseason efforts, combined with an incredible regular season, led her to be named captain of the Class AAAA All-State First Team by the West Virginia Sportswriters Association on Friday.
“Maddie works so hard not only in season but in the offseason too,” MHS head coach Lorri Lipscomb said. “She has a great understanding of the game and is able to read batters and situations, which makes us a better team overall. She is very humble, always puts her teammates before herself, and trusts that they have her back. Maddie is a great mentor and role model for our younger players, as well.”
Wisman is joined by her teammate and fellow senior Grace Robinson, who occupies a first-team spot in the infield.
Robinson batted .305 with 32 hits, 23 runs, and 16 RBIs, but her defensive talent is what sets her apart from other infielders in Class AAAA, playing a huge part in the MHS title run.
“Grace has always been a steady leader and one of the best defensive players in the state,” Lipscomb said. “She has been a 4-year starter for us and has continued to grow and improve each year. She has been an asset to the team for her mentality and drive, both on and off the field.”
Across town from MHS, a pair of University seniors were named to their third-straight All-State First Team in Maddie Campbell and Olivia Masoner.
Campbell was chosen as an infielder but also manned the pitching circle for UHS. Along with a 14-4 record, offensively she batted .492 with 61 hits, 46 runs, and 28 RBIs.
Her teammate, catcher Olivia Masoner, who was also named the 2026 Bench Award recipient, hit .323 with 31 hits and 27 RBIs, including a UHS-record 15 doubles.
Wisman is joined on the First Team by pitchers Drea Watts of Cabell Midland and Kynzi Bellamy of George Washington.
Watts, a senior and 2025 state Player of the Year, was 20-3 in the circle with a 0.63 ERA in 155 innings. She totaled 342 strikeouts in 2026.
Bellamy, an impressive freshman for the Patriots, tossed 153 innings with a 21-5 record and 1.56 ERA. Bellamy was a key part of the Patriots’ semifinal run in Class AAAA.
Hurricane senior Hadley Lawson joins Masoner after zero errors behind the plate this season and five home runs.
Krista Durkin (senior, Parkersburg), Becca Conrad (senior, Cabell Midland), and Jersey Rummel (senior, Jefferson) conclude the infield on the Class AAAA First Team.
The three outfielders earning top honors were Addi Musser from Washington, Natali Tomblin of George Washington, and Spring Mills senior Jocilyn Graham.
Musser led Washington back to South Charleston batting .500 with 23 extra-base hits (12 HRs), 33 runs, and 30 RBIs.
Tomblin totaled 48 base knocks with eight doubles and four homers, while Graham paced the Cardinals offensively at .529 with 54 hits, 60 RBIs, and 10 home runs.
A pair of impressive utility players round out the Class AAAA First Team in Buckhannon-Upshur junior Kennedy Marple and Parkersburg South sophomore Anniston Shelton.
Marple was named the Big 10 conference Player of the Year, batting .510 with a 1.478 OPS. She hit 22 XBH (12 doubles), scored 42 runs, and drove in 41 more. Marple was also the Lady Bucs’ top arm with a 15-5 record, 2.10 ERA, and 131 Ks.
Shelton, who has quickly become one of the top players in the state, batted .425 with 31 hits (6 doubles, 3 triples), while also earning a 12-5 record with 221 Ks in the circle with a 1.76 ERA.
“Annie is a true worker who trains at a high level,” Parkersburg South head coach Tim Burch said. “She’s the most competitive athlete I’ve ever coached and approaches everything she does differently than any player her age.”
Spring Mills sophomore Ally Selby was named captain of the Class AAAA Second Team (.490, 51 hits, 49 RBIs, 45 runs).
Wooden plaques in the shape of West Virginia that include the player’s name, school, licensed WVSWA logo, and year of the honoree are available to all-state first team, second team, and honorable mentions and can be purchased from the Bear Wood Company through WVSWA.org or Bearwoodcompany.com.
