Gordon Cathell

Gordon Blaine Cathell, 79, cherished husband and father, went to be with the Lord on March 22, 2023. Gordon was born on April 19, 1943, in Marquess. He was the son of the late Thomas Gordon and Winona (Murray) Cathell.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father; brother-in-law, Robert Richards; and nieces, Shelley Richards and Chrissy Bailey. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Patricia (Bailey) Cathell, of New Town. He is also survived by his daughters, Andrea (Christian) Smith, of Jefferson City, Tenn., and Jennifer (Scott) Moore, of Winchester, Va.; son, Thomas (Kelsey) Cathell, of Morgantown; one sister, Jo Claire Richards; four nieces; and five nephews. He also has three grandchildren, grandson Cooper and granddaughters Brooklyn and Taylor.

Gordon was an outdoorsman. He loved to hunt with members of his family, and he appreciated nature and all that it provided. Gordon felt strongly about the importance of hard work. He farmed all of his life, making time each year, even when away from home, to help during the harvesting season. He worked construction, working on projects such as building I-68 and the WVU coliseum. He owned an insurance company with his loving wife Pat, was a realtor and lastly worked as a railroad engineer for CSX, where he worked for almost 30 years before retiring.

Gordon was a scholar. He received a Bachelor of Science in biology from Alderson Broaddus University and a master’s degree in physiology from WVU. He served his country during the Vietnam war when called. He used his education and brilliance while studying and testing nerve agents at a testing facility in Maryland. Gordon was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, nephew and friend to many. He adored his family. He worked extremely hard to assure they were provided for and all needs and wants were always exceeded. Gordon was a big, strong, loving man that showed his unconditional love every day. He will be greatly missed. He passed peacefully surround by his family at Mon General Hospital in Morgantown.

Family and friends will be received at Bolyard Funeral Home, 79 Morgantown Ave., Newburg, from 3-8 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, and from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 27, with Pastor John Shaffer and Pastor David Murray officiating. Interment will follow at the Mount Zion Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the Taylor County Honor Guard and the U.S. Army Honor Guard.
