Watching ‘Perfect Days’ is a beautiful way to spend an evening

I’m breaking my norm this week by reviewing a movie that was released last year but had no theatrical showings around here. I had the chance to screen Wim Wenders’s “Perfect Days” earlier this year during awards season, and it was easily one of the best films  I watched. I never had a chance to write about it, but now that it’s streaming on Hulu, I decided  it’s time to give it a proper review.  Hirayama (Kôji Yakusho) is a janitor for the public restrooms in Tokyo. Each day, he wakes up, trims his mustache, mists his plants, gets a drink from the vending ...

Changing the face of scientist: Astrophysicist finds home in Hollywood

When Erin Macdonald was young, she was enamored by various scientists she saw on television, inspiring her to pursue a degree in astrophysics.  In an interview with The Dominion Post, Macdonald shared about some of her early inspiration.  “I first wanted to be a scientist because I watched ‘The X Files’ growing up, and I was obsessed with Dana Scully; coolest woman to ever exist. Also, I loved the film ‘Contact’ with Jody Foster, who played Dr. Ellie Arroway. That was sort of my first thought. Like, ‘Oh, astronomer is a job. You could study space that can be ...

When “Deadpool” hit theaters in 2016, it broke records to become the highest-grossing   R-rated movie at the time. Two years later, “Deadpool 2” did even better, beating out its predecessor. Beyond being commercially successful, both were critically successful, too. Despite the overall love for the character and franchise, I have been a bit more standoffish toward them. I thought the jokes in the original were funny the first time, but the replay value has been minimal for me, and the second one felt stale out of the gate. All that to say, I went into Shawn Levy’s ...

‘Indentiteaze’ explores what it means to be non-binary

The discussion around gender identity is incredibly fraught. It often brings up intense feelings from people who may not have thought about it with as much nuance as it deserves. So whenever possible, I think it’s important to look to those who have spent more time considering the subject. Jessie Earl, who goes by Jessie Gender on YouTube, has recently released the sci-fi short film “Identiteaze” on the streaming service Nebula, which examines what it means to be non-binary.  When Aaron (James Tison) and Erin (Maggie Mae Fish) find themselves in a blank room, they struggle ...
