Dedication on Saturday marks 100th anniversary of Doughboy Memorial

On Saturday, American Legion Post 44 will mark the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Doughboy Soldiers’ Memorial with a 10 a.m. ceremony on the front lawn of the Barbour County Courthouse in Philippi. A photo, recently discovered in Post 44’s archives, shows the crowd of thousands who gathered at the courthouse for the original dedication on Armistice Day 1923. Engraved on a brass plaque on the base of the statue are the names of those soldiers from Barbour County who gave their lives in service to our country in World War I. Preston Honor Guard hosts Veterans Day ceremony today

The Preston County Honor Guard will be hosting a Veterans Day observance at 10:30 a.m. today on the courthouse lawn. The public is invited to attend. The Preston County Honor Guard, consisting of member from all of the VFW Posts, and Vietnam Veterans Chapter 977, will honor veterans from all branches of the service. The program will include guest speakers, a traditional three-shot rifle volley; “Taps” and a prayer for all who have served, are now serving and those who are still missing in action. Purses For Power program collects much-needed supplies for victims

Women’s Energy Network of West Virginia (WEN WV) announced the third year of the Purses for Power program in West Virginia. Last year, WEN WV donated over 100 purses to Hope Inc., Phoenix House, Sojourner’s (YWCA Shelter) and United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties, and United Way of Marion County, among others. These donations help support women and children entering shelters in West Virginia after crimes of domestic or sexual violence, as well as other organizations supporting underrepresented populations.
