James C. Barnett, 85, of Westover, passed away Monday, July 20, 2026, in his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 20, 1940, in Morgantown, and lived a life marked by devotion, hard work, and deep love for those around him.
James was the son of the late Grover Barnett and the late Avie Triplett Barnett. He was also preceded in death by his son, James Michael Barnett; one sister; and five brothers, whose memories remained a part of his life throughout the years, and he carried his family history with him with quiet strength and dignity.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Norma J. Savage Barnett, who shared with him a lifetime of love, companionship, and steadfast devotion. James also leaves behind his children, Debra Shane and husband Roger, Barry Barnett and wife Kimberly, Randy Barnett and wife Tammy, Steve Barnett and wife Kim, and Jason Barnett. He was a also a proud grandfather to 12 grandchildren and a cherished great-grandfather to 17 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy and pride.
James retired from Bethlehem Steel after working as a coal miner, a career that reflected his strong work ethic and determination. He understood the value of hard work and carried that lesson throughout his life.
He was a lifelong resident of Westover and took great pride in the community he called home. Those who knew him will remember that he loved talking to everyone and never met a stranger. His friendly nature and warm spirit made him easy to love and impossible to forget.
Above all else, James loved his family and always put them first. He often spoke of how hard his childhood had been, remembering times when there was very little food and not much of anything else. Because of those early struggles, he made it his mission to ensure that his children never had to experience the same hardships. He gave them the best start in life he could, and his children knew they were deeply loved and well cared for. His family was proud to call him dad, and they will forever treasure the example he set through his sacrifice, strength, and unwavering love.
James also found peace in the simple pleasures of life. He loved sitting on his back porch wearing his straw hat and smoking his pipe while watching his tomato plants grow. There was something special to him about tending those plants and later enjoying the fruit of his labor. Those quiet moments reflected the kind of man he was, content in the familiar comforts of home and happiest when surrounded by the life he had built with his own hands and heart.
The family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to Amedisys Hospice for the love and care shown to James and his family during such a difficult time.
Friends may gather in McCulla Funeral Home Thursday, July 23, from 3 to 7 p.m. and again Friday, July 24, from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service, with Pastor Dan Meadows officiating. Burial will follow at Pisgah Cemetery.
