Prep roundup: Softball enters final week of regular season

MORGANTOWN – May is officially here and spring sports are on a crash course toward the postseason, with lacrosse and softball each at the final stages of the campaign.

SOFTBALL

The final week of the regular season has arrived and the University High softball team will battle John Marshall for the OVAC 5A championship on Wednesday night in Wheeling.

The Hawks advance to the finals by-way of a 7-0 victory over Steubenville on Saturday evening.
Senior Maddie Campbell threw a complete game in the circle with 10 strikeouts, also earning a pair of base hits at the plate.

Morgantown fell just short of returning to the OVAC championship with a one-run loss to the Monarchs in the semifinals, 5-4. Senior Beth Robinson drove in three runs and scored two as well, including a two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning.

MHS will close the regular season out against Oak Glen on Tuesday and Lincoln on Wednesday.

Preston dropped both contests of a doubleheader against Southern (Md.) on Monday evening. The Knights will finish the week with a three-game homestand, welcoming North Marion, Tucker County, and Lincoln to Kingwood.

BASEBALL

University High has won three of its last four games, with victories over Parkersburg South (Friday), Parkersburg (Saturday), and Preston (Monday). Senior Max Cash was 2 for 4 against the Knights on Monday with five RBI. His two hits were a triple and his fourth home run of the season.

Preston’s loss to UHS was its fourth in a row, and the week won’t get much easier with games against Lincoln, Grafton, and Morgantown to end the week.

Trinity Christian dropped back-to-back games against Cameron, first in the OVAC 1A-3A championship, then again on Monday in a regular-season matchup.

Clay-Battelle fell to St. Mary’s on Monday, 7-2, and will host Tygarts Valley and River (Oh.) to cap the w penultimate week of the regular season.
