MORGANTOWN - Trey White’s sack of Michael Hawkins for a safety was the final defensive play that sealed No. 15 Texas Tech’s 53-48 victory over West Virginia on Saturday night inside Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock, Texas.
Otherwise, the game was all about offense.
Both West Virginia and Texas Tech combined for 1,220 yards, but the Red Raiders (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) outscored the Mountaineers (5-4, 2-4), 10-0, in the fourth quarter to erase a 48-41 deficit. Texas Tech quarterback Thomas Castellanos passed for a career-high 362 yards and five touchdowns. His 5-yard TD pass to Kenny Johnson with 2:44 remaining was the winning score. Castellanos also rushed for 102 yards on 21 attempts.
Hawkins countered with video-game numbers himself, finishing with 303 yards passing and one touchdown, while adding 88 yards rushing and three scores on the ground. WVU running back Cam Cook rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown.
But, Hawkins was sacked on WVU’s final two possessions of the game. The first came on a fourth-and-10 play — also from White — and then he was tripped up again in the end zone with 1:30 remaining for the final score.
Texas Tech recovered WVU’s onside kick attempt and ran out the clock.
