Former West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen was fired as the offensive coordinator at Nebraska on Saturday in the wake of the Cornhuskers’ loss at Illinois 24-13 on Friday.

"Like so many of you, I am angry, I am disappointed and I am frustrated with our results this season," coach Matt Rhule said in a statement. “As the head coach, I am ultimately responsible for every aspect of our program -- including wins and losses -- and it is my responsibility to make changes when they are warranted.”

Holgorsen had been the offensive coordinator at Nebraska since 2024 after being a consultant at TCU and the head coach at Houston. The Cornhuskers had a 7-6 season in 2025, and are off to a 5-4 start this season.

Rhule had enough after the offense was ranked 12th in the Big Ten and 96th nationally since entering conference competition. Nebraska hadn’t scored more than 20 points in the four-game losing streak.

"While there are many areas that need improvement, our offensive plan and execution is simply not working. Earlier today, I relieved offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen of his duties. As I have recently shared, Dana has a fantastic offensive mind, he is a strong leader, and he has done great work here at Nebraska. But simply, we need a change.”

Holgorsen was the Mountaineers’ head coach from 2011 to 2018. He went 61-41 with WVU and had the Mountaineers ranked in the top 25 multiple times, including being as high as No. 5 in 2012. Holgorsen led the team to two bowl wins and multiple bowl games.

Now, the 55-year-old will be looking for another job.
