Editors of newspapers or otherwise are voracious consumers of words. From articles to books to blogs to social media posts, editors can’t help but read it all.

After full days of editing newspaper and online content, I need something different to digest, which leads me to one of my favorite pastimes, combining my love for food, getting creative in the kitchen and consuming the written word. I say it loud and proud: I love reading cookbooks.

Many of you may be thinking, what enjoyment could come from reading lists of ingredients?

In my world, oodles of enjoyment.

Like a well-written novel takes its reader back in time or to a foreign land or to a mountaintop getaway, a good recipe sets the stage for a savory journey or a sweet escape.

Cookbooks filled with vintage favorites are my favorites. Stained pages, dog-eared corners and starred recipes designate which cookbooks are used and read most at my house. It might be a toss-up between a Pennsylvania Grange cookbook or a United Methodist Church anniversary collection – both of which are decades old and well worn, and I can’t discount the Better Homes and Gardens red-and-white-checkered binder. These cookbooks are the compilations of the tried and true. The lists of simple, easy-to-find ingredients that have proven themselves worthy of generations of cooks and eaters.

This passion for recipe collections has fueled a new project at the Dominion Post. A keepsake cookbook titled “250 Years at the Table: Holiday Recipes & Traditions” is coming in December, but we need your help to create another collection of favorites.

Please share your recipes for the treasured Christmas cookies or the family-friendly holiday side dish – recipes for the dishes that make the season special. You can submit your recipes online at dominionpost.com/forms/holiday-recipes or fill out an entry form found in the daily and Sunday editions (on Page C6 today) and mail it in or drop it off.

This collection of north-central West Virginia’s recipes – including a couple from my own kitchen – will be a good read for all of us.
