MORGANTOWN -- West Virginia football made an adjustment to its 2027 schedule Tuesday morning. The Mountaineers announced they’ve added a home game against Purdue to their 2027 slate, with a date announced in the coming days.

"We are looking forward to hosting Purdue in Morgantown next season for the first time since 1995,” Athletic Director Wren Baker said in a statement.

The addition of the Boilermakers comes as a preparation for the new 24-team College Football Playoff format, expected in 2027. Along with adding 24 teams, the new format requires Power Four teams to play 10 Power Four games, which means one in addition to the nine Big 12 games. WVU was scheduled to play no Power Four opponents, with Ohio, Southern Mississippi and VMI on the slate. The Mountaineers had a home-and-home with Alabama, but that was canceled.

"It is an important addition for us, because it now gives us 10 Power 4 games on our schedule, which is a requirement in the expanded College Football Playoff,” Baker said.

Which game Purdue will replace will be announced soon.

“It also gives us a regional Big Ten opponent visiting Milan Puskar Stadium, which I know Mountaineer Nation will be excited about,” Baker said. “With the addition of Purdue, we will have further announcements on our 2027 schedule as we finalize everything in the coming days.”

WVU hasn’t played Purdue since 1996. The Mountaineers have played the Boilermakers twice, at home in 1995 and on the road in 1996. WVU won on the road in 1996, 20-6, and lost at home in 1995, 26-25. Purdue is 3-5 this season and has two wins in the Big Ten.
