KINGWOOD - Preston County had a record participation for the midterm election, according to Count Clerk Dave Sypolt, who said 8,625 of the county’s 19,962 voters cast ballots in this election, for a 43% voter turnout.

"We had a few hiccups, but this is the fastest we’ve finished returns," he said. Sypolt said this election was the county’s first time using the express poll books. He said he thought the combined polls would only need one book, however the Secretary of State said a second one would have to be added.

An express poll book is an electronic poll book system used in elections to replace traditional paper poll books for quickly checking in voters, verifying their registration, and issuing the correct ballot.

In the State Senator 14th District race, Republican Jay Taylor received 5,900 votes and his opponent Democrat Jason Armentrout received 2,488.

Republican George Street, incumbent, was unopposed in the 83rd District House of Delegates race, and received 3,182 votes.

Republican D.R. "Buck" Jennings retained his seat in the 84th House of Delegates Race against Democrat challenger Colin Savage. Jennings received 2,783 votes and Savage 1,324.

In the county commission race, Republican Nicholas James Thorn received 5,776 votes and his opponent Democrat Dale Preston McCray received 2,594.

Republican Dave Sypolt received 6,881 votes for County Clerk. He was unopposed.
