-- WVU School of Art and Design presents Brunhilde Biebuyck, art history and museum professions at 5 p.m. at Museum Education Center Grand Hall, Art Museum of WVU. "A Forgotten Montparnasse Legacy: How One Parisian Address Supported American Women Artists and Scholars" focuses on two initiatives founded at 4 rue de Chevreuse, today’s Reid Hall: The American Girls’ Art Club (1893 - 1914) and The American University Women’s Club (1922 - 1939). It traces the largely forgotten continuity between these two successive communities. Across several decades, both Clubs offered American women artists and scholars a secure residence and a base from which to pursue their professional ambitions. Yet their significance extended well beyond the protection they provided. Situated in the increasingly cosmopolitan environment of Montparnasse, the Clubs placed its residents within easy reach of Parisian cultural and intellectual life. They also promoted both European and transatlantic networks through which their work could be discovered. Although access to these opportunities remained socially circumscribed, the Clubs, even after their closure, fostered enduring relationships, careers, and both artistic and academic legacies, many of which are only being reclaimed today. This event is part of the fall lecture series in support of the Blanche Lazzell: Becoming an American Modernist exhibition at the Art Museum of WVU. This is a free, non-ticketed event.
