The WVU College of Creative Arts and Media will offer a variety of performances and events during the month of November.

School of Art and Design

The faculty exhibit "Earth is a Snowball" will close Nov. 4. Until then, the exhibit can be seen at the Paul and Laura Mesaros Galleries in the WVU Canady Creative Arts Center. The Messaros Galleries are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour prior to Discovery and Curiosity Series events.

On Nov. 5, Brunhilde Biebuyck will deliver the J. Bernard Schultz Endowed Lecture in Art History at 5 p.m. at the Art Museum of WVU Museum Education Center.

Biebuyck's lecture, "A Forgotten Montparnasse Legacy: How One Parisian Address Supported American Women Artists and Scholars," will focus on two initiatives founded at 4 rue de Chevreuse, today's Reid Hall: The American Girls’ Art Club (1893-1914) and The American University Women’s Club (1922-39). She will trace the largely forgotten continuity between these two successive communities. Across several decades, both Clubs offered American women artists and scholars a secure residence and a base from which to pursue their professional ambitions. Situated in the increasingly cosmopolitan environment of Montparnasse, the Clubs placed its residents within easy reach of Parisian cultural and intellectual life. They also promoted both European and transatlantic networks through which their work could be discovered. Although access to these opportunities remained socially circumscribed, the Clubs, even after their closure, fostered enduring relationships, careers, and both artistic and academic legacies, many of which are only being reclaimed today.

The J. Bernard Schultz Lecture Series in Art History was endowed in 2004 by donors who wish to remain anonymous. The lecture series honors former WVU College of Creative Arts Dean Bernie Schultz, who is also a professor emeritus of Art History in the School of Art and Design. Each year, the lecture series brings a leading art historian to WVU to enhance the Art History and Museum Professions program and to engage in the intellectual life of the University and the community.

School of Music

Continuing the "America at 250" theme, the Jazz Ensembles will pay tribute to jazz legends and veterans Frank Foster, Clark Terry, Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane with a performance on Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre in the WVU Canady Creative Arts Center.

This concert honors the artists' extraordinary contributions to America's musical heritage and recognizes the profound impact their artistry has had on the evolution of jazz over the past century.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children and seniors. Purchase tickets at go.wvu.edu/jazz-ensembles.

The School of Music will present several other performances, including faculty and student recitals, throughout November.

School of Theatre and Dance

The WVU School of Theatre and Dance presents "As You Like It" Nov. 12-14 and Nov. 17-20 in the Gladys G. Davis Theatre at the WVU Canady Creative Arts Center.

In this classic comedy by William Shakespeare, brothers scheme and fight over power and wealth, and a duke's banished daughter disguises herself as a shepherd boy and flees with her cousin. In the Forest of Arden, though, all is set right: familial relationships are mended, identities are revealed, and romantic love blossoms.

Tickets can be purchased online at go.wvu.edu/asyoulikeit, by phone at 304-293-SHOW or in person at the box office located in the main lobby of the WVU Canady Creative Arts Center, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Art Museum of WVU

The Art Museum of WVU will host "Lunchtime Looks" on Nov. 6 at 12:30 p.m. with Sydney Bauer, a doctoral student and a recipient of the Kenan Fellowship through the Royster Society of Fellows at UNC-Chapel Hill. A specialist in 18th- and 19th-century North American art, Bauer will examine connections between Blanche Lazzell and her contemporary Georgia O'Keefe.

The next Maker Space Thursday will be Nov. 12 from 3-6 p.m. Take a walk through the Blanche Lazzell exhibit, then join museum staff in the Grand Hall for some light crafting and calming music. Bring your own crafts or work with provided materials.

The Art Museum will host a special white-line printmaking workshop Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. Learn how to make white-line linocut prints in the Provincetown style used by Blanche Lazzell, taking inspiration from the native West Virginian's works on display throughout the museum's galleries.

Because creating linocut prints requires sharp tools, there will be alternative printmaking activities for kids.

The Art Museum hosts family-friendly, kid-oriented tailgate experiences in the Nath Sculpture Garden during home WVU football games. Enjoy outdoor games like cornhole and hopscotch, as well as crafts like magnet photo frames and DIY game signs. Upcoming tailgates include the Nov. 14 game versus Kansas and Nov. 21 game versus Houston; times are to be announced.

Art Museum events are free and open to the public. Find more information about events and exhibits at artmuseum.wvu.edu.
