Morgantown’s Maddox Twigg ready to shine under the brightest lights

Morgantown's Maddox Twigg (2) has tallied 765 total yards and 12 touchdowns through nine quarters of play in 2026.

MORGANTOWN – Through two and a half years as the quarterback at Morgantown High School, Maddox Twigg has written plenty of memorable chapters in his unfinished story.

Friday night brings the latest opportunity for the junior to publish another section of his book as he leads the No. 1 Mohigans into battle against No. 4 Martinsburg at 7 p.m. at historic Pony Lewis Field.

Last season in the 2025 Class AAAA state championship, Morgantown bested the Bulldogs 28-21 behind a heroic performance by Twigg, who led his team to its first state title in 20 years.

Then a sophomore, Twigg tallied 316 total yards and accounted for all four of the Mohigans' touchdowns (one passing, three rushing) in the victory. He also led the defense in tackles from the safety position during the title bout.

On Friday, the two teams will meet in one of the most anticipated matchups of the 2026 season in any class across the state, with the winner solidifying itself at the top of Class AAAA.

"Nothing makes this week any different from any other week for us," Twigg said. "We practice and prepare the same and enter every week with the same mentality and motivation no matter who the opponent is. We aren't going to treat Martinsburg any different than any other team we play this season. The goal is to come out and play our game."

In total, Twigg has completed about nine quarters on the field through the opening six weeks of the season after missing some time in the first few games with injury.

He's thrown for 498 yards and five touchdowns, rushed for 267 yards and seven TDs on 20 carries (13.3 avg.), and made his presence felt defensively.

"Our offense has continued to heat up each week," Twigg said. "We have an explosive running game and a fired-up passing attack over top of the rushing attack."

The Bulldogs enter Week 7 5-0, highlighted by a Week 2 victory over Bridgeport, 35-21. Senior quarterback Brian Dick leads Martinsburg, averaging 272 total yards and scoring 21 touchdowns.

Fellow seniors Boston Todd and Zane Wipf have been Dick's favorite targets in 2026, with senior Kingston McDonald-Gibson and junior Kevin Myers providing a solid 1-2 punch out of the backfield.

There's zero doubt where most eyes will be on Friday night as the Mohigans and Bulldogs square off in one of the biggest regular-season games in recent years in WV high school football.

For Twigg, the pressure is welcome.

"I enjoy playing in these types of games the best because I feed off the pressure and feel I play better under pressure," he said. "All we have to do to be successful against Martinsburg this week is play together as a team and bring energy from the very beginning."
