It's getting colder in Morgantown, which means many people will be looking for indoor activities to fill their days. Consider adding a trip to the movies to your weekend plans!
On Friday, "Adam's Fire" will come to AMC Morgantown, allowing local audiences to see a new film that puts West Virginia at the center of a story about what it means to be American.
Set in the mountains of Lost Creek, "Adam's Fire" follows a young boy named Adam as he navigates an unimaginable tragedy. Along the way, he finds guidance from a wise and spiritual neighbor who helps him begin a journey toward healing and forgiveness.
The story also introduces an unexpected friendship. When a young visitor from out of town helps Adam escape a pair of bullies, the two boys form a connection despite coming from seemingly very different worlds. Their friendship becomes a way for the film to explore the things that unite us, even when our backgrounds and experiences appear to set us apart.
At a time when so much of the American experience presented in the media focuses on division, "Adam's Fire" offers a different perspective. The film explores faith, family, friendship, forgiveness and compassion, while portraying a side of America that can be easy to overlook.
That message has already attracted attention beyond West Virginia. Diplomatic Watch recently featured the film in an article titled "An America the World Rarely Sees," examining how the story presents an alternative picture of American life. The Washington Times described it as "a profoundly human story," while Film Threat gave the film an 8/10 rating and called it "delicate and uplifting."
West Virginia is more than a backdrop in the film. According to producer Tom Ohmer, a former member of the U.S. military, the state helped shape the story itself.
"West Virginia gave us much more than a beautiful setting, it gave us the heart of the story," Ohmer said. "We wanted to show an America that people around the world don’t often get to see -- hospitable, thoughtful and compassionate."
The film also features several U.S. military veterans, including former Navy SEAL Chris Alvarez, who portrays Adam's father.
For Morgantown audiences, the screening Friday is an opportunity to experience a piece of West Virginia storytelling on the big screen -- and to consider the ways our state continues to inspire artists, filmmakers and storytellers.
As an arts community, we know that creative work provides more than entertainment, and can actually help us see our communities, our neighbors and even ourselves from a different perspective.
Adam's Fire opens Friday in select theaters, including AMC Morgantown.
