West Virginia University Police issued a Campus Warning Tuesday following multiple anonymous reports of alleged hazing involving at least two on-campus fraternity sites.
UPD officers are investigating.
WVU has zero tolerance for hazing or any dangerous activities that threaten student safety or well-being. The University is committed to providing a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff. Because criminal investigations are active, the University cannot release additional information about the reports at this time.
All reported hazing incidents are responded to quickly, investigated fully, and also referred to the WVU Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities for review.
Anyone who has been a target of hazing or has information that may be helpful to investigators is asked to call University Police at 304-293-3136, or visit the department at 886 Chestnut Ridge Road, Morgantown. Information may also be shared anonymously via the LiveSafe app.
Allegations of hazing can also be reported to the WVU Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities at 304-293-8111, WVU Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life at 304-293-8201, or WVU Office of Compliance and Prevention Education at 304-293-5600.
A Campus Warning is issued when a Clery-reportable crime occurs within the area designated by the Clery Act, is reported to Campus Security Authorities -- like WVU Police -- or local police agencies, and is considered by the University to represent a serious or continuing campus threat.
These types of warnings are required by law.
Under the Stop Campus Hazing Act, which is an amendment to the Clery Act, hazing is a Clery-reportable crime.
The Act defines "hazing" to mean "any intentional, knowing, or reckless act committed by a person (whether individually or in concert with other persons) against another person or persons regardless of the willingness of such other person or persons to participate, that (1) is committed in the course of an initiation into, an affiliation with, or the maintenance of membership in, a student organization; and (2) causes or creates a risk, above the reasonable risk encountered in the course of participation in the institution of higher education or the organization, of physical or psychological injury.
