Commission approves emergency request to move polling site

MORGANTOWN - The Monongalia County Commission on Wednesday approved an emergency request to change the polling location for Precinct 30 ahead of the Nov. 3 general election.

The planned voting location for the precinct was the Marilla Center, located in BOPARC's Marilla Park.

Shortly after the conclusion of BOPARC’s summer camp season, the building was closed to undergo significant renovations as part of the larger project addressing lower Marilla Park.

Monongalia County Clerk Carye Blaney said her office was recently notified that the work would not be significantly complete in time to use the building as a polling site.

Blaney said the polling location is being relocated to Mountainview Elementary School.

"Letters will go out today, with the commission's approval, to all of the voters. There are 606 registered voters in that precinct, and we are prepared to send them all new voter registration cards and letters today," Blaney said.

In other news from Wednesday's meeting, the commission approved the advertisement for bidders interested in the renovation project for White Birch Tower II, the future home of the Monongalia County Health Department.

The first publication of the advertisement appeared in Thursday's edition of The Dominion Post.

As previously reported, the bid opening is scheduled for Nov. 4, and the construction project is expected to run from mid-November to June 1.

The county is working under a July 1 deadline to relocate the health department out of its current facilities per the terms of a sales agreement with West Virginia University Medicine.

Lastly, the commission approved the consolidation of two parcels located off Hornbeck Road and adjacent to the Harvest Ridge Subdivision.

The request, from Billy Joe Howell and Wanda J. Howell, will consolidate a 1.61-acre parcel and an 8.38-acre parcel adjacent to the Harvest Ridge Subdivision into one.

As the parcels fall outside the county's West Run Planning District, the request did not appear before the Monongalia County Planning Commission, and no additional information was available.
