MORGANTOWN — Golf season is entering its final few weeks, with regional tournament play set to begin around the state. Morgantown, University, and Preston High will compete at Moundsville Country Club on Monday, October 5, for a chance to earn a spot in the 2026 state tournament, October 12-13, in Wheeling at Oglebay Resort.
Clay-Battelle and Trinity will compete in the Class A, Region I tournament on Monday, at Mingo Bottom Golf Club. The Class AA-A state golf tournament will be played on October 14-15 following the conclusion of the Class AAAA-AAA tournament.
Soccer will begin regional play the week of October 19, with the state tournament for both boys and girls being set for November 4-7 in Beckley.
The University girls captured their first OVAC conference title over the weekend and are one of the hottest teams in the state in any class at the moment.
The Hawks are now 11-2 in 2026 and have outscored their opponents 58 to 10. UHS will host North Marion on Thursday at 5:45 p.m.
On the boys’ side, MHS sits 6-3-2 and will host Jefferson on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Mohigans are 4-1-1 in their last six games. University High stands at 3-11 and welcomes North Marion on Thursday, following the girls’ matchup.
In the world of volleyball, Morgantown High remains one of the top teams in the state with a 29-7 record. Their crosstown rival, University, is also near 30 wins at 28-11. The two teams will battle on Wednesday, October 7, for the second of two regular-season matchups. MHS took the first match 3-1 on Baker's Ridge.
In Class A, Trinity Christian holds a 10-5-1 record after a 3-0 sweep of East Fairmont on Tuesday. The Warriors will visit St. Mary's on Thursday at 5 p.m.
