BOPARC, Morgantown Curling Club launch curling league

MORGANTOWN - If you can't wait until the 2030 Winter Olympics for the kind of action that only competitive curling can provide, you're in luck.
BOPARC and the Morgantown Curling Club have teamed up to launch a new curling league coming to the BOPARC Sports Complex - also known as the Morgantown Ice Arena - this fall.
The partnership will give community members a chance to try the sport, learn from experienced curlers, and play as part of a team.
The league is planned to begin in November, with games on Monday evenings. Players will be able to register as a team or individually.
A learn-to-play opportunity is planned for October so newcomers can get familiar with curling before the season begins.
Curling - the convergence of shuffleboard on ice and frantic competitive squeegeeing - had largely been overlooked by Americans until the underdog U.S. men's curling team defeated Sweden to bring home the gold in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.
A short time later, Jeff Ryan began laying the groundwork for what would become the Morgantown Curling Club by trekking to USA Curling headquarters in Wisconsin to pick up the stones and equipment needed to play.
West Virginia's original curling club held its first curling session on Dec. 21, 2019.
Today, the group regularly holds learn-to-curl events and participates in regional tournaments.
"Since 2018, Morgantown Curling Club has been introducing Mountaineers to the exciting sport of curling. This partnership with BOPARC is a fantastic opportunity for us to expand our club's offerings and attract new members. The league will also give our current club members far more opportunities to develop their skills on the ice and take their game to the next level," Ryan said.
Registration details, fees and information about the learn-to-play event will be available at BOPARC.org.
