Morgantown High’s depth may be its biggest strength in 2026

MORGANTOWN – Through four weeks of the 2026 high school football season, Morgantown High School has dominated its opponents to start 3-0.
The Mohigans have allowed 12 points through 12 quarters, with nine of those coming in the first half of Week 1 against Parkersburg.
MHS has scored 132 points in those three victories, including 57 points last week against Hedgesville, surpassing the single-game total of 56 the 2025 state championship team scored against Buckhannon-Upshur in the opening round of the Class AAAA playoffs.
The key to the defending state champs’ success has been depth.
Junior standout quarterback Maddox Twigg hasn't even played a full four quarters, playing the first quarter in Week 1 before an injury, then returning in Week 3 for the first half against Hedgesville. Still, he's managed to make the impact he needs through only three quarters.
Returning WVSWA Second-Team All-State selection Brooks King missed the Week 3 contest against the Eagles and is expected to return for Hall of Fame night on Friday against Spring Mills.
"Staying healthy is one of the most important things in football," MHS senior wide receiver Tanzer George said. "I've battled injuries throughout my time playing, and we've all known how important it is to focus on recovery and work on our bodies to make sure everything is good to go. We want to be as close to full strength as possible, continuing into the back end of the season."
That isn't to say that the players who had their names called in place of some injured starters haven't done their jobs.
After starting running back Carson Keeling went out wth an injury, junior Lyric Blake stepped in and had a five-touchdown performance against Jefferson in Week 2.
Backup quarterback Chantz Lenhart led the Mohigans’ offense to a 42-0 victory over the Cougars.
Other players have stepped up in multiple positions as well.
Down the stretch, depth will play a major role in every team’s success.
For the Mohigans, that begins on Friday as they welcome Spring Mills to Pony Lewis Field. A road trip to Wheeling Park waits next week before MHS returns home to host Martinsburg in a massive rematch of the 2025 Class AAAA state championship.
"Some key things to focus on down the stretch are staying consistent and improving every single week," George said. "Now that the schedule is getting tougher, we have to all execute when needed and continue building trust on every side of the ball."
