Bow-WOW! Volunteers bring new life to Stanley’s Spot

MORGANTOWN – The dog days of summer took on a whole new meaning for members of the community service organization Morgantown Forward this year.
Since April, the MoFos - that's what they call themselves - have logged more than 425 volunteer hours teaching the old Stanley's Spot Dog Park some new tricks.
And now they're ready to show it off.
From noon-2 p.m. Saturday, friends of both the two and four-legged variety are welcome to a ribbon cutting for the new look Stanley's Spot - named for the beloved dalmatian of primary benefactor George Laishley, part of the Morgantown Dog Owners Group (MDOG) that got BOPARC to agree to the land’s use as a pooch playpen in 2003.
Improvements to the park include a mut-themed mural by Greenmont artists Bryn and Max Perrott and the installation of an eight-foot polyresin sculpture of a bright yellow fire hydrant.
In addition to an overall tidying up and the clearing of a creekside trail, BOPARC got involved with the installation of a new pooch-friendly water fountain as well as benches, picnic tables and signage.
BOPARC will be on hand Saturday taking suggestions for future park improvements.
Free hot dogs, and dog treats, will be available, and the Playhound Bus - a mobile doggy daycare unit - will be on site.
You'll even have the opportunity to meet Chance, the Morgantown Fire Department's arson detection canine.
Stanley's Spot Dog Park is located along the Deckers Creek Trail between the Walnut and Pleasant Street bridges.
The park project was aided by the Downtown Rotary Club, Your Community Foundation and the Mon River Trails Conservancy.
