University High basketball senior Luke Byrer commits to Fairmont State

MORGANTOWN – University High School basketball standout Luke Byrer has steadily risen as an impact player on Baker's Ridge.
After a breakout sophomore season, Byrer entered his junior year with the Hawks with an increased role. The 6'4, 190-pound Class of 2027 prospect averaged 15 points, five rebounds, and two steals per contest last season, helping lead UHS to a 16-7 record and their second straight Class AAAA state tournament appearance and earning WVSWA Second-Team All-State honors.
Fairmont State finished the 2025-2026 season with a 26-6 record as runner-ups in the Mountain East Conference.
"It's a huge honor to have the opportunity to play at Fairmont State," Byrer said. "It's such a respected and recognized program that I'm thankful to be a part of. Coach (Dan) Mondragon has a winning mentality and wants his players to succeed; I can see that. He cares about the people around him and does everything he can to help his guys reach their full potential."
Gaining varsity experience the last two seasons, beginning as a sophomore, is something Byrer says has helped elevate his game.
"Coach (Joe) Schmidle has always believed in me and given me a lot of opportunities," he said. "That has helped me grow in confidence and leadership. He started playing me on varsity as a sophomore and put me in tough situations to push me. I think that's all paying off for me now."
As a forward who can also handle the ball and stretch the floor with his shooting range, Byrer knows his adaptability to any situation on the court is a plus.
"I try to stay steady in order to analyze what's going on and make clear decisions," he said. "I think my versatility will help in college because I'll work to fit in wherever I am needed to help the team win."
With his senior year at UHS right around the corner, Luke is working to be ready not only physically but also mentally.
"I want to be the best teammate and leader I can possibly be this season," he said. "We have a talented group of guys that want to succeed and go as far as we can go."
Byrer says the program at Fairmont State is gaining a player who is coachable and hard working.
"I'm really thankful that I am able to play the game," he said. "And I know it won't last forever. While I can, I want to give it everything I possibly have and play in a way that also honors God, because he gave me the gift and talent to play."
