Last month, Travel + Leisure released its list of the most naturally beautiful states in the country. While most of us here know West Virginia is unbeatable on that front, the Mountain State placed second in the rankings -- behind only New Hampshire.
"Researchers noted (West Virginia) was the only state in the top 10 to perform consistently well across all measured categories, thanks to its extensive forests, more than 6,600 miles of rivers, six national parks, and nearly 200 waterfalls," the magazine said.
Work done over the past decade or so has certainly gained the attention of travel and tourism writers. As the governor's office recently pointed out, Architectural Digest said the New River Gorge was among the most beautiful places in the country; Southern Living said Davis is one of the best Southern mountain towns to visit in the fall; U.S. News and World Report said the New River Gorge is one of the country's best underrated destinations; and Travel + Leisure also said the Mountain State is one of the country's top destinations for an extended fall foliage season.
The work that helped garner all that attention has been recognized, too, as the U.S. Travel Association gave our Department of Tourism its ESTO Award for Excellence in Print Marketing for the 2026 West Virginia Vacation Guide.
"West Virginia has incredible momentum, and these national honors show that people across the country are taking notice," Secretary of Tourism Kayla Kessinger said. "Whether you're looking for world-class outdoor adventure, a weekend in one of our mountain towns, or simply a place to enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in America, you can find it in Almost Heaven."
It is encouraging to see Kessinger understands the magnitude of the momentum she is responsible for maintaining. West Virginia has earned this level of recognition. We can't let up.
