New deputy sworn in for Preston County

KINGWOOD - The Preston County Sheriff’s Department has a new deputy.
Marcus Elliott of Kingwood was sworn in by Circuit Court Judge Steven L. Shaffer. The event took place in the Preston County Courthouse on Wednesday morning with Elliott’s family and friends and several local deputies in attendance.
Elliott, who graduated from Preston High School in 2025, said he has always wanted to have a career in law enforcement.
"I wanted to stay in the county that I grew up in," he said. "I want to make this my career. I’m looking forward to attending the academy."
Sheriff Scott Spiker said Elliott will be a "good fit" in his department.
"I’m sure he’s excited about starting the job," Spiker said. "I want to get him into the academy as soon as possible."
Spiker was referring to the State Police Academy in Charleston, where Elliott will train before beginning his service as a deputy.
Spiker said he has openings for two more deputies. He said the next test for applicants will be Oct. 24.
