MORGANTOWN -- At the 105th American Legion Auxiliary National Convention, held in Louisville, Kentucky, Mountaineer Unit 174 in Morgantown was announced as a winner of the prestigious National President’s Award for Excellence.

With more than 7,400 American Legion Auxiliary Units operating across the United States, Mountaineer Unit 174 achieved a milestone by being one of only five units nationwide selected to receive the award this year.

The road to the award began in February 2026, when ALA National President Pam Ray (2025-2026) visited Mountaineer Unit 174 as part of her official tour across West Virginia. During her visit, Ray witnessed firsthand the Unit's exceptional ability to unite the local Legion Family, foster a deep sense of community, and show unwavering dedication to younger generations. Following the visit, Ray encouraged Department of West Virginia Auxiliary President Kim Mellie (2025-2026) to nominate the Morgantown unit for the national distinction.

"I am so excited for your Unit and for all of you," said Ray in a special video message delivered to the Unit following the ceremony.

During the national presentation, Southern Division National Vice President Vickie Thrower-Mills (2025-2026) praised the West Virginia volunteers.

"This Unit is creating a legacy by growing future leaders," Thrower-Mills said. "This Unit excels at bringing people together: Legionnaires, Sons (of the American Legion), (American Legion) Riders, Juniors (of the American Legion Auxiliary), schools, businesses, and Veteran Service Organizations all work together side-by-side."

Unit 174 member Elaine Sampson took the stage in Louisville to accept the award on behalf of the entire local membership.

"It was my distinct honor and pleasure to receive the award on behalf of my Unit and its entire membership," Sampson stated. "It is so overwhelming to be recognized for simply doing what we do for our veterans, their families, and our community."

Reflecting on the historic win, Mountaineer Unit 174 President Sandra Harper added, "I can't believe it, I still think I need to pinch myself."
