Morgantown, University High tied at No. 1 in state playoff ratings

MORGANTOWN – A pair of rivals sit atop the first WVSSAC state playoff rankings of the season, with Morgantown and University sharing the No. 1 spot after three weeks of play.
Both the Hawks and Mohigans have opened the current campaign with undefeated 3-0 records, while enjoying some comfortable victories.
The two teams have combined to score 299 points, while allowing 72 to their opponents.
UHS has scored 34 more points in three games (167) than the second-highest scoring team in Class AAAA (Martinsburg, 133).
Senior quarterback Harrison Helbig has thrown for 851 yards and 12 touchdowns, and has rushed for three more scores and 121 yards in the opening three weeks of the season. Ten of his completions have gone to fellow senior Hayden George for 324 yards and seven touchdowns.
The return of junior running back Brody Kehler, who was sidelined with injury after Week 4 of 2025, has been felt. Kehler has totaled 255 yards and four touchdowns on 31 carries (85 YPG). He has formed a strong 1-2 punch with senior Jaedyn Katchur in the backfield. Katchur has 173 yards on 16 carries (10.8 YPC). Both have rushed for over 100 yards in a single game already this season.
University welcomes No. 7 Wheeling Park to Baker's Ridge for a massive Week 4 contest.
The Mohigans are averaging one point allowed per quarter this season, allowing just 12 points through three games.
Nine of those 12 points came in the opening half of the season in Week 1 against Parkersburg (a 33-9 victory). Since the shaky start in the opening two quarters of Week 1, Morgantown has been one of the more dominant teams in the state.
A 42-0 shutout of Jefferson in Week 2 was followed by a 57-3 drubbing of Hedgesville. The Week 2 victory came without star player Maddox Twigg in the lineup. Junior running back Lyric Blake has emerged as a solid piece of the Mohigans' offensive puzzle with seven touchdowns in the last two games.
Twigg returned for the first half last week against the Eagles, completing 11 of 14 passes and scoring 3 touchdowns. His return from injury comes at an ideal time for MHS, which will enjoy a bye week this week before returning to Pony Lewis Field for a matchup with Spring Mills in Week 5.
