Morgantown Community Newcomers Club
Are you new to Morgantown and the greater Morgantown community? Or you live here already or have experienced a recent life change and wish to expand your circle of acquaintances and familiarity with the area's people and places. Either way, the Morgantown Community Newcomers' Club welcomes you! The club also welcomes members from surrounding areas.
Club activities help newcomers and native community members connect and include monthly coffees and luncheons featuring area speakers, an annual fall picnic, and special interest groups such as walking, books, movies, games, cooking, and wine tasting as well as special trips and activities.
Upcoming monthly members' coffees are held on the first Wednesday of the month, 10 a.m. - noon, on Oct. 7, Nov. 4 and Dec. 2 at various locations and include a speaker or program. Monthly members' luncheons are held at various area eateries on the third Wednesday of the month, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., starting Oct. 21, and continuing with Nov. 18 and Dec. 16. Luncheons feature a speaker.
Luncheons and coffees are opportunities for new members to meet current club members and learn how club membership can further connect them with their community. Family reunion
The Core Family and Friends Reunion is happening. Hope to see you Sunday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Westwood Senior Pavilion on Dupont Road in Westover. Bring a covered dish. Paper products will be provided. Many great raffles will be available. Come and enjoy good food and good company.

WVU School of Art and Design presents Visiting Artist Ginger Brooks Takahashi at 5 p.m. at Bloch Learning and Performance Hall, WVU Canady Creative Arts Center. Takahashi is a transdisciplinary artist and educator based in Pittsburgh. Her performance, installation and site responsive works examine our relationships to the mediums that connect us. These public projects are platforms for intimate interaction, an extension of feminist and queer praxis. Her work is included in the current "Carnegie International" exhibition at the Carnegie Museum of Art. This is a free, non-ticketed event.

The Mountaineer Chapter, National Active and Retired Federal Employees, will meet at noon for lunch at The Wine Bar, 510 Burroughs Street, Morgantown. Members, guests and all interested are welcome.

The 2026 West Virginia Quilt Festival, with the theme of "Happy Birthday, USA" in honor of the nation's 250th birthday celebration, will be held at Cedar Lakes Conference Center in Ripley. Daily admission to the West Virginia Quilt Festival is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12 years old. There is no charge for children under 2. The festival quilt display will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The West Virginia Quilt Festival also offers numerous classes about quilting techniques to those who sign up. The deadline for class registration is Aug. 31. The West Virginia Quilt Festival will have raffle baskets, a raffle quilt, a West Virginia Quilters Inc. Market with ready-made items and a Little Quilt Auction. There will be an open silent auction Thursday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and each day will feature a different selection of Little Quilts. www.wvquilters.org

The North Central West Virginia Home Builders Association will host its Hard Hats & Horsepower Cruise-In from 3-7 p.m. at Builders FirstSource/O.C. Cluss Lumber, 2025 Pleasant Valley Road, Fairmont. The free, family-friendly event is open to the public. All types of vehicles are welcome, including cars, trucks, Jeeps, motorcycles, classics, hot rods, customs and anything else with wheels. Activities will include Touch-a-Truck and face painting, and a food truck will be on-site. Vehicle owners are invited to bring their rides and join the cruise-in; no registration is required. The West Virginia Trappers Association will hold its annual 2026 convention at the Gilmer County Recreation Center, 1365 Sycamore Run Road, Glenville. The Board of Directors meeting will be held Thursday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. Gates open at 9 a.m. Friday. Various demos at the barn near the camping area, and trap dying and waxing both days. Vendors will be present Friday and Saturday. Benefit auction will be Friday and also a spaghetti dinner on Friday evening. There will be a BB Gun Range and Archery Range, trap setting contests, along with other activities for the kids and ladies. The gates open at 8 a.m. Saturday. The Trapper Education class registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and classes begin at 9 a.m. General membership meeting will be Saturday after the education graduation in the main building. -- West Virginia Pawpaw Festival will be held from noon to 5 p.m. at the Core Arboretum, Monongahela Boulevard, Morgantown. Come to WVU Core Arboretum to taste, buy and learn about pawpaws! This annual event celebrating a native fall fruit of the forest is family-friendly, free and open to the public, no registration needed. The festival will be in the Lawn Area at the Arboretum, and free parking is available in the adjacent WVU Coliseum parking lot. We will have Peterson Pawpaws select varieties of pawpaw fruit available to sample and purchase, samples of pawpaw dishes prepared by a chef, a talk by a pawpaw expert, the North American Pawpaw Growers Association booth, pawpaw trees and other native plants for sale, live music, food trucks and more. This is the 8th annual WV Pawpaw Festival at WVU Core Arboretum. Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is the largest fruit native to West Virginia. Pawpaws have a delicious tropical flavor that some describe as a combination of banana, mango and pineapple and a smooth, creamy texture. Pawpaws ripen in autumn, and we host several pawpaw events at the Arboretum each year to coincide with pawpaw season. Even though pawpaws are fairly common, many people have never tasted a pawpaw, and we hope to change that!
-- The Arnettsville Community Center will host a Family Friendly Dance with local band Nic of Tyme. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the band will play from 7 till 9 p.m. We encourage grandparents to bring their grandchildren and parents to bring their children to this family fun event. Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for teens and free for ages 12 and under. There will be raffles, cake walks and concessions. The Arnettsville Community Center is located at 4120 Fairmont Road. -- Free Fernfall Explorer Activity will be happening from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Morgantown Exotic Animal & Reptile Expo, 1188 Pineview Drive, Morgantown. At the PandaMae Crochet table, kids can become Fernfall Explorers by finding hidden fern tokens, completing a mini Explorer Field Test, discovering a mystery clue, and earning an Explorer sticker. The activity at our table is free, and families can stop by anytime during the expo.

-- The Morgantown Public Library is pleased to announce the new Fall Session of Tuesday Evening Pre-School Story Times beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. Fall Tuesday Evening Story Times will continue for a six-week period ending Oct. 27. Evening Story Times are for children between the ages of two and six. Participants can visit free play stations, listen to stories, sing songs, socialize with other children and other fun activities. Reed School of Media and Communications presents "America's Rural Future: What do we lose without local news?" at 5 p.m. at WVU Media Innovation Center, Evansdale Crossing. The fast-moving changes in the national media landscape, which has caused the loss of traditional local media, have significantly affected the reporting of local news and shifted how many people get their information about what's happening in their local communities. This has important consequences for rural American civic life. This public event, co-hosted by America's Rural Future: The Brookings-AEI Commission on U.S. Rural Prosperity, will explore the implications of these shifts. This is a free, non-ticketed event.

St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church will hold its 20th Annual Classic Car Show in the parking lot of the church located at 185 E. Main St., Uniontown, PA. Registration will start at noon and end at 2 p.m., after which the car show will continue until 4 p.m. RAIN or SHINE. There is a registration fee of $12 and the first 150 cars will receive dash plaques and goody bags. Over 25 trophies, including one large trophy-Father Kyprian's Favorite, will be awarded.
Classes will include 1900-1930, 1931-1950, 1951-1960, 1961-1965, 1966-1970, 1971-1976, 1977-1987, 1988-2010, Street Rod/Modified, Trucks 1959 and older and 1960-2010. No judging for 2011 and newer. Arnie Amber, Oldies DJ, 50/50 drawing contest, Byzantine Auction and delicious food including a variety of sandwiches, soups, halushki, baked goods and more will be featured. Usually the Morgantown High School class of 1964 has a well-attended reunion every five years, but we decided not to wait until 2029. So we came up with throwing an 80th birthday party for ourselves. On Thursday, the class will meet at Smokin’ J’s, at the Holiday Inn at 1188 Pineview Drive at 4:30 p.m. On Friday, the class will ride on the PRT at 10 a.m. and have a scavenger hunt. In the afternoon, there will be a mystery gift exchange and a Zoom call with those who can’t attend. Throughout the day, the Holiday Inn will be the base for socializing, with lunch there. Pizza and veggie trays will be for dinner. Saturday, the class will tour MHS at 9 a.m. followed by coffee and donuts in the school cafeteria. We’ll gather to watch the WVU football game at the Holiday Inn. Concluding the reunion will be dinner at Crosley’s Restaurant, 704 Richwood Ave., at 7 p.m., reservations required. The cost of the entire reunion is $80. Dixie Downes has designed a t-shirt. The class has sent invitations to those with email. Goshen Baptist Church at 1070 Goshen Road may be the first to offer a Fall & Christmas Bazaar in Morgantown this year! (Yes, we know it is early.) Fall and Christmas crafts will be available as well as baked goods and a breakfast and lunch menu (homemade pies). The American Baptist Women Ministry invites you to come from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds from the bazaar benefit ABWM mission projects.
