Art Museum of WVU announces fall events

The Art Museum of WVU will host the exhibition “Blanche Lazzell: Becoming an American Modernist” and a variety of related events and activities open to the community throughout the fall semester.
"We consider the Art Museum of WVU a living space that welcomes everyone through the doors to be inspired and ask questions," said Aaron Garvey, the museum's director. "Our events allow community members to engage with our team to better understand our exhibitions and our mission and to see something new--and possibly surprising--within our galleries."
Director of the WVU School of Art and Design Kristina Olson will present "'It will be my own or nothing': Reclaiming the Legacy of Blanche Lazzell" on Sept. 24 from 5-7 p.m. Olson will discuss the research she conducted on Blanche Lazzell in collaboration with several colleagues, Lazzell's work in the broader context of European modernism, and Lazzell's integral role in developing American cubism.
Throughout the fall, the Art Museum of WVU will host several "Lunchtime Looks" sessions, which are short lectures by invited experts that occur at 12:30 p.m. on weekdays.
The next Lunchtime Looks will be held Oct. 2 at 12:30 p.m. with Bernie and Cookie Schultz, who will discuss the life of Blanche Lazzell and her time in France. Bernie is a former dean of the College of Creative Arts and Professor Emeritus of Art History. Cookie is a retired professor from the WVU Honors College who has researched and written about Lazzell.
On Oct. 18, the community is invited to the Museum Monster Mash from 2-4 p.m. There will be crafts, games, and a prize giveaway for those who participate in a scavenger hunt. Costumes are highly encouraged for this all-ages event.
The Art Museum will bring back "Mystery at the Museum" just before Halloween. Playing on the murder mystery idea, the public is invited to help solve the mystery of a crime committed at the museum and bring the culprit to justice. The event starts promptly at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 23.
The last Lunchtime Looks of the fall will be Nov. 6 at 12:30 p.m. with Sydney Bauer, a doctoral student and a recipient of the Kenan Fellowship through the Royster Society of Fellows at UNC-Chapel Hill. She specializes in 18th- and 19th-century North American art. For her presentation, Bauer will examine the connections between Blanche Lazzell and her contemporary Georgia O'Keefe.
Join the Art Museum on Nov. 15 from 2-4 p.m. for the Provincetown Printmaking Workshop and make linocut prints in the white-line style Lazzell is known for. There will be alternative printmaking activities for kids and others who prefer not to use sharp tools. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is encouraged to ensure there are enough supplies. Be sure to follow @artmuseumofwvu for event updates and registration information.
For this year's Family Day, the Art Museum is partnering with the Literacy Volunteers of Monongalia and Preston Counties. On Dec. 5 from 2-4 p.m., staff and volunteers will offer group tours, parent-child teaching activities, and make-and-take art projects.
The Art Museum will close out the semester with Student Wind-Down events on Dec. 9-10. Students can come by for snacks, drinks, art activities, and a quiet space to relax and get through the stress of finals week.
