MORGANTOWN -- West Virginia assistant coach and former standout running back for the Mountaineers, Noel Devine, 38, was arrested and booked at 12:45 p.m. Sunday at the North Central Regional Jail charged with one felony count of strangulation, according to the Magistrate Court of Monongalia County.
Devine’s bond is set at $40,000. No additional information on the case is available at this time.
Devine was on the sidelines Saturday for WVU’s 52-7 win over U.T. Martin as an assistant running backs coach and offensive analyst.
Before joining the staff in 2025, the Fort Myers, Florida, native was a three-year starter for the Mountaineers from 2007-10 and broke all sorts of records. He’s the program’s career all-purpose yardage leader and is third in the program in rushing (4,315). He is the all-time running back reception leader and third in running back receiving yards (710) at WVU. On the ground, Devine is No. 6 all-time in WVU rushing touchdowns (29) and 10th at WVU in all-time scoring (186) by a position player.
Devine helped the Mountaineers in four bowl games, including the 2008 Fiesta, 2008 Meineke Car Care, 2010 Gator and 2010 Champs Sports. He was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame in 2021.
After playing for WVU, Devine signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011, before playing in the UFL and Canadian Football League.
Devine went into coaching after his professional career. He joined the Mountaineers staff when Rich Rodriguez was hired, and his son, running back Andre Devine, is currently on the team. WVU is set to play No. 25 Virginia on Saturday.
A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. Sept. 23 before Magistrate Court Judge Deanna Lindsay.
