Preston falls to Fairmont Senior 42-7, but has something to build on from second half

KINGWOOD – The Preston High School football team did its best impression of the WVU Mountaineers on Friday night against Fairmont Senior.
The Knights allowed 35 points in the first half, and the Polar Bears led 35-0 at halftime, eventually winning the contest 42-7.
But the second half was a completely different story, much like Rich Rod's squad against Coastal Carolina last weekend.
Preston played Fairmont evenly in the second half, 7-7, and head coach Mark Deep saw who his team truly is.
"The second half we actually came out and played football, and made Fairmont Senior play too," Deep said. "It's all about throwing the score away for us and realizing that when we put the effort in and play as hard as we can, we are a solid football team. It's all about playing for the guys next to us and giving our everything for each other."
Fairmont Senior scored on its opening three drives of the game, with a pair of interceptions sandwiched in between.
Senior quarterback Anthony Smith added his third touchdown of the first quarter to extend the lead to 21-0 after one frame.
Two more scores came before halftime.
"We didn't want to play to start the game," Deep said. "We have to have a short memory. I was watching HUDL film until 2 a.m. ready to prepare for Robert C. Byrd."
The Knights will travel for the first time this season to visit RCB next week before returning home to host East Fairmont for the Buckwheat Bowl on September 25.
"We have to keep getting better, and that starts with practice habits," Deep said. "I think playing away from home next week will be a good change of pace and allow us to loosen up a bit."
